what is the easiest backup software for windows XP?

I'm looking for a easy to understand backup program for my computer. I am a complete nerd and I don't understand the computer technical lingo. Also, when a hardrive crashes,(it's happened twice to me so far) where should I have the backup to use when it happens again. Some say to have it on a partition of your hardrive but doesn't that partition also go ka-putt too? How do I learn the workings of a computer so I can better understand the technical aspects of it?

1. I think it's easiest just to have an external hard drive, and Acronis True Image installed. You can schedule all your backups to run automatically.
