How to recover a deleted file on a mac?

my little bro deleted an important file on my computer and I want to know if there is a way to recover it.

1. You have to buy the software to recover deleted files. Macintosh Data Recovery is a program that can do this, too. There are others. However, if you expect to get it back without any outside software, you're sunk. Once you put a file in that trash can and click EMPTY TRASH, say, "bye bye." Last, may I recommend backing up your drive with an external drive such as Seagate's 320 gigabyte 7200 RPM USB 2.0 drives from Wal-mart. Not too expensive either. Also, grab a copy of Disk Warrior while you're at it from the Apple Store or online Apple store.

3. It depends. Do you have time machine? Or do you have an older mac? I know with time machine, if you have the computer plugged into a hardrive thing it saves your entire computer daily. So if you have that you just activate time machine, and whoosh, search for it. I'm sorry I can't be more helpful.
