What data recovery service do you recommend?

I have to send in a broken hard drive (from an external hard drive) into a data recovery lab to get my 10 years worth of pictures off of it. Prices I've seen online range from $99-2300 and I have NO idea which companies are reputable and which just plain stink. Has anyone else had a similar experience? If so, which companies do you recommend and what prices seemed reasonable? Also, the issue with my drive is not one that be fixed by simply plugging the drive into a new enclosure or running a recovery software program.
