What is the best data recovery software available. My 320Gb External Hard Disk Drive has crashed?

Need a full backup of the 320 Gb disk. If anyone has done this before. What are the exact steps I shall follow? I had a few logical drives with different filesystems, how do I make sure the recovery software interprets this correctly!
