What is the best FREE lost data recovery software?

I had a system crash and one of my hard drives disappeared yet it shows up in dos. I tried a few data recovery softwares but they either cost money or do not work. I tried PC Inspector File Recovery but when I saved my data to my desktop (other hard drive) it did not work.. and all the files apparently had the same size so something is wrong.

My computer crashed so I took it to geek squad (best-buy) they told me that I had “mechanical failure” & it would be 500$ to ship it out and SEE if they could recovery anything!!! 500$ to SEE if they could recovery, there was no guarantee I would get my data back (they must be crazy) So I did a search for Data Recovery in Chicago and found a company named Promise Data Recovery, they did a FREE (it only took 3 hours)!! Evaluation and told me that it was not a mechanical problem with my drive but a “logical corruption”. I was desperate so I approved the case for 399$.....they got all my data back and were really helpful. I wouldn’t recommend downloading softwares because they can make the situation worse….just take it to a local data recovery office if your data is really important…hope this helps!!!
