what is a good data recovery program?

my friend wiped his slave drive out. using a recovery program he can find most of what he had lost but the program cant recover it because its only a trial version, and i cant find it in the store. so before i go out and buy a new program i want to know which is a good one.

1. This program worked for me when I accidentally deleted some files. http://www.cbltech.com/data-recovery/software/ Did he just delete his files? or was it reformatted? Some software won't work in all situations.
