Software Backups

Backup software that spans discs and burns regular file format?

Is there any backup software that will burn onto as many discs as required WITHOUT using some type of proprietary file format? I just want it burned as a regular data CD or DVD with files just like when you burn a regular disc of files, then prompt for a new disc when it's full, continuing till all the data is backed up. Is there such a thing?

  1. Yes. There are a number of free backup programs on Free Hard Disk Backup and Restore, Hard Disk Image and Cloning Utilities http://www.thefreecountry.com/utilities/backupandimage.shtml Some of the free ones will split the backup for you, and you can then burn the files to separate CD/DVDs. The commercial software will usually do the splitting and burning for you automatically, as well.
  2. You can use a software like Nero or Ashampoo to do the backup, but my suggestion is try mozy, a free service with online and automatic backup (install land forget): https://mozy.com/?code=94HW8M use this link to get 2.25 GB for free
  3. Since most backup products create special image file with its own extension I think that copy/paste is the best option for you.
  4. Consider using ZipGenius. It is a free file compression utility that creates archives in a variety of standard and open formats. The "Suite" version (also free) comes with a tool called Cutter. This tool can take the archive of your backup and automatically "cut" it into a series files that will each fit on any media you choose (Floppy, CD, DVD, etc.). From there you can copy the pieces to individuals discs. The tool supports command line functions as well so you can automate much of the process. You can find ZipGenius and many other free software titles here: http://www.free-software-catalog.com/software.php?SoftwareID=34 Good luck!!
