Best program for data recovery?

I recently had a problem with my PC which caused me to 'quick' format the hard drive.As I didnt have backups, I have lost all the contents of my hard drive. Can anyone suggest an inexpensive (£40) program that will recover the files as they are. I have tried a few free ones and they either fail to find the contents or recover each file and split it into smaller files!! Any suggestions?
